NYMBO Update

Bickley Forest MBO Saturday 31st August 2009

Dave Lloyd had planned an excellent course in the northern half of Dalby Forest. The A4 map didn't look large enough for 2 hours but the steep valleys in Staindale and some soft tracks in Bickley slowed everyone down except for Andrew Windrum!! I am sorry that some of you had difficulty finding the event centre. It was signposted from Ebberston but the grid reference and farm name was wrong. The White Rose was originally going to be based at South Moor Farm but the co-ordinator told me in July that it had changed. I amended the flier and then posted the incorrect one back onto the web page. Dave Lloyd had also assumed that the diagram of the fields at the event centre was based on South Moor Farm which is why the start was in the wrong place. Jens had drawn another excellent map but there wasn't enough room for the key. It will be back on next month's map.

Good map reading was always going to be more improtant than fitness at this event so it was hardly surprising that the orienteers did better than the bike riders in a lot of categories. The majority of riders headed south then anti-clockwise around the spurs of Bickley before trying to negotiate a route through Staindale without too much climb and descent. Andrew Windrum scored one of the most impressive totals of the season by clearing the plateau above High Rigg Farm (the event centre for the next event) first before continuing clockwise through Staindale then around Bickley to win by 87 points having only missed 4 controls!!!! The one-way red route caused an extra navigation problem but a few riders sacrificed their scores just to have a bit of fun on the technical sections - and thanks for no reports of anyone going the wrong way. Mandy Faint was the highest scoring female rider and Zac Field the strongest junior. Congratulations especially to those orienteers who competed in all 7 events this weekend - as well as Dave and Sue Relton who managed the SI scoring all weekend.

I enjoyed my ride having got myself really fit on holiday in the Alps. Unfortunately my knee collapsed again playing golf last week so it looks like a new one is needed in the very near future. I had a pleasant hour checking out the views from the Bickley plateau towards Langdale and Wykeham then collected controls around Crosscliffe afterwards. Thanks to all of the helpers who made the event run smoothly (once you had found the parking field) and especial thanks to Steve & Andrea Foster who volunteered at the last minute to collect 7 controls while you were heading home.

Future events

Saturday 19th September NYMBO - 2 hour MBO - Dalby Forest

This is your final chance of a forest MBO event this season in probably the best forest in England. Wayne Nicholson has planned an excellent and challenging course. The event centre is definitely at High Rigg Farm as usual where camping is available but all of the caravan pitches have already been booked. Please use the forest drive this month but print off the flier to avoid paying the toll charge. Last chance for a barbeque as well if you are staying for the marathon!! Sunday 20th September NYMBO Moors Marathon

We are organising this event for the third year. There are 3 routes of 45, 30 and 15 miles so something for everyone. The route isn't marked so you will need basic map reading skills to follow the pre-marked map and route description. All routes follow superb bridleways across the largest moorland area in Britain. All proceeds to the Scarborough & Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team again. If you don't want to ride but would like to be involved we still need marshals for 2 checkpoints in idyllic locations. Please let me know if you are interested in riding or helping. Entries to nymboevents@btinternet.com

Saturday 17th October NYMBO - 4 hour MBO - Masham Moors

The final event of the season is being planned by David Day and Roz Bardon. The competition area includes the rolling countryside in and between the valleys of three rivers - the Ure, Skell and Laver - as well as the moors to the west. The event centre is at Fearby village hall - just 2 miles west of Masham. Prizes will be awarded to the leading riders in all categories of the NYMBO League at 3.30 so please stay for the prizegiving if possible. The Black Swan is open all day and only 200m from the village hall!!!Entries to nymboentries@stoneriggs.plus.com

PS A few riders have already booked their weeks in our apartment for winter skiing or summer walking and biking. As Barbara has just retired we won't be using it in the school holidays any more so some peak weeks still available!! Please get back to me if you would like to use it.
