NYMBO Update – December

Thornton Watlass Lanequest

I could almost copy my comments from last year when we were at Gruelling Grewelthorpe but, to be fair, it wasn't quite as cold - honestly. I was still impressed to see 24 riders getting out of the Christmas shopping and travelling a fair distance to do so. This lower part of Wensleydale is a beautiful area with a network of lovely lanes through picturesque villages. The flooded roads in between just made it more interesting and at least we finished with clean bikes. The final bridleway with 3 controls tempted a lot of riders and now we know that wetproof socks don't work when the water is up to our knees. The atmosphere and open fire in the Buck Inn was very welcome afterwards so most people seemed reluctant to go home!!

Andy Conn nearly cleared up, I managed to sort out a good route while newcomers Charlotte & Sven Wardle matched David Day & Roz Barden (although they live locally and were on a tandem)!! Karen Blackburn showed that her knee operation is working with an impressive 330 points to beat most of the M21's. Top result of the day though must go to the Bauwens family with 17 month old Laura fast asleep in her bike seat for most of the way. What some parents will do to keep their children quiet!!
