NYMBO Update
Ryedale Trailquest
Thanks to Dave Goodwin (assisted by Andy Mundy and Matthew Goodwin) for planning this event. They spent many hours checking out the bridleways as well as the private tracks on the Duncombe Estate that we could use followed by meetings with the agent. I hope you think, as I do, that it was worth it. Ryedale is beautiful even in the mud and it was great to ride tracks that the public can't generally ride. There were a couple of problems with extra tracks. Jens did an excellent job producing such a clear map but he will get access to the orienteering maps of the area before we return to the area, hopefully, next year. There was also a brand new forest road between #14 and 7 which confused a lot of riders – including yours truly. Controls 11 and 29 seemed to be difficult to find so if you couldn't please email me and I will check your splits then amend your score.
The optimum route seemed to be anti-clockwise going up Riccaldale and finishing in Ryedale. Unfortunately I went the other way round!! Neil and Bryan didn't and won their respective classes with similar scores – Neil outscoring Bryan by just 13 points. Angela Brand Barker was the leading woman with 395 points and 7th overall. As usua on the longer events, there weren't many juniors or generation teams so 215 points by Zachary & Jake Field in their first event together was impressive. I think they used their orienteering skills to great effect.
Thanks to the helpers again, especially John Butler who couldn't compete but just came along afterwards to collect 10 controls. There was no litter, no gates left open and no reports of any problems from farmers or gamekeepers so the final thanks again to you for coming to the event. Duncombe Park Estate will welcome us back next year. I will just check the long-range weather forecast, ignore it, and try for a drier day in June!!
There are 3 events next month over the Bank Holiday weekend with another National and NYMBO league event at Malham on Saturday, the NYMBO Marathon from Dalby Forest (not in the league) on Sunday and a 2 hour NYMBO league event in Langdale Forest as part of the Ebor White Rose event on Monday.
Camping is available at High Rigg Farm on Saturday and Sunday but please let me know if you want to book a pitch so that I can inform the farmer. (Caravans are welcome but no electric hook-ups!!)
