NYMBO Update – March
Yorkshire Wolds Trailquest
What a brilliant start to the season. Dave Evans had planned an excellent course, it was a perfect spring day and the tracks were dry, firm and fast. It is a beautiful area and everyone who avoided the thorns had 4 hours of great riding. Woldgate College made and excelent event centre and the helpers again made the event easy to organise - and left me free to have a competitive ride.
However there were a couple of problems.
Control 27 was stolen so that will cost us £100. Most riders who couldn't find the control reported it at the finish but if you didn't claim the points please send me an email.
Secondly, there were a number of riders who didn't follow public rights of way which is disappointing and justifies having numbers fastened to bikes. Some riders rode along the field edge between # 23 and #7. Other riders went down the field from #23 to the road. Sportident makes it easy to identify riders who have taken illegal shortcuts between controls.
Jens draws excellent maps with the bridleways clearly marked. In this country, we are allowed to cycle on public highways and bridleways - nowhere else without the landowners permission. There were no permissive routes marked on the map last Saturday so no-one should have felt that they had the right to cycle anywhere else.
I have decided to deduct the points from the riders who tried to gain an unfair advantage over the majority of riders who followed the public rights of way. However, in future, I will disqualify any riders who take illegal shortcuts - inadvertantly or not!! If you don't fell this is fair then don't enter NYMBO events. Landowners generally do not like mountain bikers. As 10% of our riders rode across private land last Saturday I can sympathise with their point of view.
Nick Harmer scored an impressive 443 points to win by a clear margin. John Galway is going to take some beating this year in M50 as is Mandy Faint in W40 who finished 7th overall. Bernard Cleaver and Steph Fountain must have put local knowledge to good use to win their class and finish 12th overall.
It was great to see 95 cyclists at our first event of the season - and a 4 hour event the day before a National event. However, we had over 100 pre-entries so Jens printed 130 maps to allow for the entries on the day. We had 20 extra entries but 25 riders who had pre-entered didn't turn up. I had one email to apologise for not being able to make it. I would appreciate a £1 contribution from everyone else at the next event - and the unused maps will be there!!
I enjoyed riding in the Yorkshire Wolds despite choosing a disappointing route. I enjoyed working with the regular band of volunteers especially as all of the controls were collected in by 6pm. But if the issues that occurred last week are repeated it will dampen my enthusiasm for organising future events.
