NYMBO Update

Dalby Forest MBO

Thanks this month to Steve Green who planned the event, Jens Strain for another excellent map as well as the usual band of helpers who made the event run smoothly. There were a couple of controls that caused problems so if you couldn’t find #21 or #29 please let me know and I will adjust your score. Jens told me when he brought the maps to the event that the start was also marked further along the track so will someone please explain to me why I didn’t move the banners and tapes 300m? (Senior moment!!) It would have saved a lot of explanations from Steve Green.

I thought it was yet another excellent course with plenty of route choice on a wide variety of tracks in a superb forest for mountain bikers. I hope you avoided the red route if you were trying to travel fast. I rode the section from High Rigg to Dixon’s Hollow on Friday evening. I was really impressed and will definitely return this autumn to ride the whole route. I made my route choice mistake this month after #29. I went back up into the forest and did a clockwise circuit ending up at #10 thinking I could then use the forest drive to get north of High Rigg. Wrong - it was just a long ride home for no points. Sensible riders started in the same direction but continued anticlockwise to end up on the plateau NE of High Rigg with plenty of choice before heading to the finish. The stronger riders could then also drop into Staindale.

Andrew Windrum turned the tables on Nick Harmer but Nick still won the league as Andrew missed a few events this summer. Andy Stanforth took advantage of Mike Naylor being late to win the C class while Dave Evans and John Galway were second and third overall to nip in front of John Dixon and prove the Super Vets can still do it!! John Tiffany and all the leading women – Francesca Pert, Mandy Faint, Mary Carrick, Karen Blackburn and Jess Appleton – won on the day to take their category prizes. Ralph & Chris Defty won the mixed category convincingly but the leading pairs in both classes were unable to ride. Dean & Zac Field matched Stephen & Tim Martin but had to contend with second place to them in the league.

The prizegiving was held promptly at 4.30 due to John Dixon’s preparation and calculator skills. The T shirts were supplied by Wicked Stitching of Catterick (with no spelling mistakes this year) and the prizes were Westbrook Cycles of Stokesley. The extra cash in the bank paid for the wine and chocolates!!

Final thanks to the Forestry Commission for waiving the forest toll for the day (saving you £7!) and Richard Laley at High Rigg for cutting 2m of road verge and rolling the next 2m of the field.

NYMBO League 2007

These events wouldn’t happen without the willing help of so many volunteers so I am going to name and thank them here. (I am just the co-ordinator). Apologies if I have missed anyone out.

Moors Marathon

Although the weather was very murky on Sunday morning 59 riders set off into the mist by 9.30 on the 25, 50 or 70km rides across the Moors. You will have to take my word for it that the views are superb and the tracks are a pleasure to ride. Despite the mud and lack of views everyone seemed to enjoy their day on the Moors so the event will be repeated next year - but in September and Jens will draw the map. I only produced a sketch map as I didn’t expect as many riders (and I did expect better visibility). I also thought that Jens had enough on this month with 3 Polaris maps as well as the Dalby MBO map to draw. I thought that the route descriptions would help but a lot of riders got lost in the forest so perhaps the information shouldn’t have just been jammed into a pocket!! It is also probably not a good idea to ask quad bikers or husky sledge drivers the way!!

Thanks to the National Park for not raising any objections to the event. Thanks again to the Forestry Commission for waiving not only the forest toll but also the permit fees and Richard Laley for not charging for parking. Due to their generosity we were able to make a donation of £112 to the Scarborough & Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team – and we didn’t need to call them out. All finishers received a commemorative mug supplied by Pirhana Promotions of Knaresborough.

Thanks to Barbara Willis for her help at registration (and support all year and the previous 34!!) and the checkpoint marshals:-

Les Dixon at Saltersgate Bank and Levisham

The Appleton Family at Breckon How and Cropton Bank

Danny Chan at Glaisdale

Jens & Eileen Strain at Hamer Bridge

Everyone was finished by 5.30 so I was home by 9.00. It’s a good job the weather was drier on Monday as my garden was littered with all of the equipment drying out. All put away now and ready for next season.

Winter Lanequests 10 th Nov, 8 th Dec, 12 th Jan, 9 th Feb

We have now had volunteers to plan all 4 of these events. If you fancy a less competitive ride on a Saturday morning (but the same formula of 30 controls in 2 hours) in this beautiful county followed by a pint and bar meal then please download the flier from the web page.

Clok are also organising a series of similar events on 1 st Dec, 26 th Jan and 23 rd Feb so no excuse to put your bike away until next spring.

NYMBO League 2008

The series will start again in March with the best 6 from 11 events to count again. I am thinking of having 5 forest events and 6 bridleway events next year. I have already had 3 volunteers – Dave Evans, Dave Day and Dave Lloyd but people with different names are welcome to volunteer!! I intend to have the same format but if you want to suggest any changes or different venues (inside the county boundary) please let me know.

Full results and details of all our MBO events are on the 3 web pages

www.nymbo.org.uk

www.trailquest.co.uk

www.eborienteers.org.uk

Please let me know if there are any errors in the results, any links that don’t work on the NYMBO page or you want your details removing from this mailing list.

Hopefully see you all at another NYMBO event soon.

Cheers

Steve
