NYMBO Update

Second Moors Marathon

After the wettest summer for a long time it was hardly surprising that the tracks were very muddy but 40 riders still turned up to ride one of the 3 courses around the North Yorkshire Moors and raised £100 for the Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team. At least the weather stayed dry all day for a change.

I only managed the short course but the views around the Hole of Horcum were superb. The middle course proved the toughest with having to cross Goathland Moor as well as Sneaton Moor where there was more pushing than riding. Congratulations to everyone for finishing especially James Martin and Alistair Bardon – 2 juniors on the B course. Commiserations to Lee Rawson who ran from Goathland back to Dalby once his bike had had enough.

The event had been moved forward a couple of months to try to find some better weather than last year. Bank holiday traffic may also have persuaded a few potential riders to stay off the roads. Unfortunately, it was also the only date available due to car rallies, forest events and other TCA events. Next year, it will be in September, the day after the Dalby MBO event.

A few riders got lost in Dalby Forest near Crosscliffe again. The route description tried to help but doesn't quite read correctly for this section so it has been revised for next year; there may also be an enlarged section of the map as well as a few direction arrows at each forest road junction.

Unfortunately, only 4 people volunteered to marshal the event so there were no refreshments available at Glaisdale, Hamer Bridge or Levisham. Any volunteers for next year??

Thanks to a number of people who made the event possible.

The Forestry Commission for giving permission to use the tracks in 3 forests free of charge and also to them for waiving the Dalby forest road toll.

Richard Laley at High Rigg Farm for providing the free parking and toilet.

Jens Strain for drawing an excellent map free of charge as well as manning 2 checkpoints with Eileen.

John and Les Dixon for manning the start, finish and first checkpoint.

Caygill Cycles of Richmond for providing the drinks bottles at half price.

Scarborough & Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team for providing free emergency safety cover across the Moors whenever it is needed. They always need funds and organise 2 challenge walks every year and the next one is in October so if you like to walk a long way the details are below
