A Long/Serious Route 44 miles/70km with 950m climb
0 Start at High Rigg Set off east along track to junction, turn right then second sharp left level just before the field corner (on your right) and join the tarmac road after 600m. Go straight for 200m then the road bends left and is then straight to the junction with the forest drive.
3k Straight on for 2km and then bear left as the road bends at the sign to Crosscliffe view point.
5k Follow the track as it curves left and go past the car park entrance and turn left at the edge of the escarpment along a lovely track by the viewpoint then along the good track keeping the drop on your right with superb views over Langdale Forest and Blakey Topping until you reach the gate at the edge of the forest.
9k Through the gate along the edge of Bridestones Moor until you come to the gate above Newgate Foot. Straight on then bear left along the tarmac lane to the checkpoint
11.5k Turn right through gate and follow forest edge for 300m then turn right through gate into rough field. Follow the track curving left along the edge of the escarpment through one gate, ignore the diagonal path down to the left after a further 300m then down the lovely sloping single track to Malo Cross.
13.5k Turn left through the gate (signposted Lilla Cross) and follow the forest edge on single track across soft ground then heather and through a gate onto MOD land. Keep close to the forest and cross a gravel track, straight on keeping RAF Fylingdales on your left and down to the gate at the fence corner (felled forest on your right).
15.5k Turn right at the ‘permissive bridleway’ signpost, down and up a concrete track and through the gate. Follow the gravel track keeping the forest on your right, bear left and pass the main track into Langdale Forest then down, through a gate and up the gravel track across the moor keeping the fence on your left. Ignore the singletrack on your right signposted ‘Robin Hood’s Bay’ and continue for another 700m to Louven Howe.
20.5k Through the gate on your left (the one straight ahead goes into Sneaton Forest) and follow the eroded quad track keeping the fence on your right. It is usually easier on the left hand side.
22.5k Through the gate at the tumulus and keep the fence on your left.
23.5k Bear left as the forest appears in front of you and the track improves then through another gate after 1k and take care crossing the busy A169 after a further 1k. Follow the track through the heather to the checkpoint at the Breckon Howe crossroads.
26k The Medium route turns left here to Goathland but you head straight on towards Beck Hole. Down the road for 2km to the bend where you turn right down a gated road past 3 farms, into the woods and over 3 fords. The first one will be dry, the second one won’t be and the third one may need to be waded. Please take care. Up the slope and into Grosmont where you cross the railway by the station
30k Straight on under the bridge and out of the village, over the river and bend right on the road then left along a gravel track on the north side of the river. Follow this track for 2km going under the railway and arriving at Egton Bridge.
32.5k Turn left, ignore the road on your right, over the river and bend right then straight on at the next bend towards Delves. Along this minor road then uphill and turn right just below the village along the singletrack bridleway through the woods. This is lovely but tricky with the river below you to the right. After 1k turn right at the bridleway junction, over river to the road by the railway bridge. Turn left and up the road to the pub. Turn right along a minor road to Glaisdale village. It’s pretty steep then turn right on the main street for 400m to the checkpoint on the green on your left.
36.5k Cycle up this minor road south to the moors. Through the gate and straight on along a lovely track past a pond where you bear slightly right then straight over the moors. Keep left just after the memorial and you will reach the tarmac road.
40k Bear left along the unfenced road, ignore the road down to the left and continue for 4km to the T junction.
44k Turn right, past the Lyke Wake Walk and signposted bridleway, down the hill to the checkpoint just before going over Hamer Bridge.

52k Immediately bear left up the forest road then keep right at the next junction and contour for 3k along Spiers Bank. Turn right through the forest gate then immediately left onto the tarmac road to Spiers House campsite. Pass this on your left and back into the forest, straight on over the stream then up and bear right and pass the junction to Sutherland Lodge. Down the long forest road, over the stream then up the tarmac lane past the farm and Peat Rigg to the checkpoint at the road junction.
58k Turn left, straight on passing roads to Wrelton, Keldy Cabins, the Roman Camps and Pickering then straight on as the road bends left.
60k Pass 2 farms then bear right as the tarmac finishes onto a good gravel track past a house then turn left after 1k along another gravel track passing 2 farms and a double bend to the Pickering road.
63k Turn left for 200m then right along a tarmac road for 1km. Straight on at the bridle crossing then bear right and down a rough gravel track to Farwath Crossing.
65k Over the crossing, through a gate then join the other 2 routes and turn right, through a gate then left in front of the second gate on the edge of the wood as you cross a small stream. Uphill to the corner of the wood then follow the valley bottom uphill (probably on foot) through a gate, up a grassy field keeping the farm on your left then along the grassy bridleway between a wall and fence, through a gate to the road bend. Straight on to the A169 at the Fox and Rabbit.
67k Turn left for 400m then take great care turning right down a tarmac (dead-end) minor road.
