(Nearly) Nidderdale Trailquest Comments 2007

Thanks to so many people for turning up and making the event planning worthwhile. Roz Barden and Dave Day had used their local knowledge to good effect and provided a challenging spread of controls on some lovely tracks. I cycled at least 10 new ones despite living nearby for 25 years. The event was nearly at Nidderdale – the river was just on the south west corner of the map. I expected to be cycling further west but enjoyed this area around Ripon just as much. Some of the woodland tracks were beautiful with amazing displays of bluebells. I know that some of the bridleways were fairly bumpy due to horses but if they weren’t used so often they would be badly overgrown. Thanks again to all of the helpers. They make my job so easy that I can leave them to it and enjoy my ride. We were also very lucky with the weather - compared to the downpours on Friday evening and Sunday morning.

There was plenty of route choice and no-one was going to clear up all controls so it seemed to be east then north or south then west. Looking at the splits makes interesting reading with so many different routes chosen. Andrew and Wayne showed that they can ride just as successfully together but were matched by Neil Atkinson. Henry Syska (330 points) was an impressive 4 th overall just one place ahead of an equally impressive Ann Plant with 321 points!!! It was good to see so many Generation teams again despite the 4 hour limit as well as 14 novice riders taking the 2 hour option.

Unfortunately, one farmer near Markington didn’t realise that he had a public bridleway going over his land!!! He wasn’t very pleasant to anyone who went past. I hope he didn’t spoil your day and his ignorance and obstructive manner have been reported to the Rights of Way Officer.

There are 2 items of lost property so please get in touch if you would like to reclaim a Cateye bike computer or a pair of Bloc sun glasses. A couple of riders lost their SI dibbers although they were found and handed in (the dibbers, not the riders). They would have cost £18 to replace so please take the string to fasten the dibber to your wrist for extra security.

Warwick Anderson had a close encounter with a wall but is back home after a night in hospital. He reckons that his helmet probably saved his life and he hopes to be able to ride again in June!!

Hopefully see you all at another NYMBO event soon.
